What to check before you upgrade RDS for MySQL
Major MySQL upgrades can change behavior your app relies on. Here is what to look for before you plan one — not advice for your specific database.
Engine breaking changes
- Read "What Is New in MySQL 8.4" (removed/deprecated features and changed defaults) and the upgrade notes for 8.0 → 8.4. MySQL 8.4 what's new (opens in new tab)
Extensions and plugins
- Check plugins and options (option groups) are supported on the target version. RDS docs (opens in new tab)
Parameter groups / server flags
- A major upgrade needs a parameter group for the new engine family; removed or renamed variables must be dropped. RDS docs (opens in new tab)
Drivers and ORMs
- Check client drivers and connectors support the target version and its default authentication plugin (caching_sha2_password; mysql_native_password is disabled by default in 8.4). Release notes (opens in new tab)
Pre-upgrade checks and safer rollouts
- RDS runs prechecks before a MySQL major upgrade and records failures in PrePatchCompatibility.log. RDS MySQL major upgrades (opens in new tab)
- MySQL Shell's upgrade checker utility (util.checkForServerUpgrade) reports incompatibilities before you upgrade. MySQL upgrade checker (opens in new tab)
- RDS/Aurora Blue/Green Deployments let you upgrade a staging copy kept in sync, test it, then switch over. Blue/Green Deployments (opens in new tab)
- Take a snapshot before upgrading and rehearse the upgrade on a restored copy to measure downtime.
