What to check before you upgrade Cloud SQL
Major PostgreSQL upgrades can change behavior your app relies on. Here is what to look for before you plan one — not advice for your specific database.
Engine breaking changes
- Read the "Migration to Version N" section of the release notes for every major version you skip; it lists incompatible changes. PostgreSQL release notes (opens in new tab)
Extensions and plugins
- Check installed extensions are supported on the target version (Cloud SQL for MySQL users: see the MySQL upgrade guide). Cloud SQL extensions (opens in new tab)
Parameter groups / server flags
- Review database flags: some are not supported on the target version. Cloud SQL flags (opens in new tab)
Drivers and ORMs
- Check client drivers and ORMs support the target server version (e.g. authentication method changes such as SCRAM-SHA-256 password encryption, the default since PostgreSQL 14). Release notes (opens in new tab)
Pre-upgrade checks and safer rollouts
- Cloud SQL runs pre-upgrade verification for in-place major upgrades and reports failures. Cloud SQL major upgrades (opens in new tab)
- pg_upgrade --check runs compatibility checks without changing data. pg_upgrade (opens in new tab)
- Take a snapshot before upgrading and rehearse the upgrade on a restored copy to measure downtime.

What should I check before upgrading off an old Cloud SQL version?
Engine breaking changes, Extensions and plugins, Parameter groups / server flags, Drivers and ORMs, Pre-upgrade checks and safer rollouts. See the checklist on this page for links to the official documentation.
