What to check before you upgrade Aurora PostgreSQL
Major PostgreSQL upgrades can change behavior your app relies on. Here is what to look for before you plan one — not advice for your specific database.
Engine breaking changes
- Read the "Migration to Version N" section of the release notes for every major version you skip; it lists incompatible changes. PostgreSQL release notes (opens in new tab)
Extensions and plugins
- Check each installed extension is supported on the target version. Aurora PostgreSQL extensions (opens in new tab)
Parameter groups / server flags
- A major upgrade needs cluster and instance parameter groups for the new engine family. Aurora docs (opens in new tab)
Drivers and ORMs
- Check client drivers and ORMs support the target server version (e.g. authentication method changes such as SCRAM-SHA-256 password encryption, the default since PostgreSQL 14). Release notes (opens in new tab)
Pre-upgrade checks and safer rollouts
- Aurora runs pre-upgrade checks for major versions and reports blockers. Aurora PostgreSQL upgrades (opens in new tab)
- pg_upgrade --check runs compatibility checks without changing data. pg_upgrade (opens in new tab)
- RDS/Aurora Blue/Green Deployments let you upgrade a staging copy kept in sync, test it, then switch over. Blue/Green Deployments (opens in new tab)
- Take a snapshot before upgrading and rehearse the upgrade on a restored copy to measure downtime.
