What to check before you upgrade AWS Lambda runtime
When a Lambda runtime is deprecated, the work is moving code and dependencies to a newer language version. Here is what to look for.
Language version breaking changes
- Read the language's official "what's new"/migration notes for each version you skip (e.g. Python "What's New", Node.js release notes and migration guides, Java JDK release notes, .NET breaking changes). Python What's New (opens in new tab)
- Node.js publishes breaking changes per major release. Node.js releases (opens in new tab)
- .NET lists breaking changes per version. .NET breaking changes (opens in new tab)
Dependencies and SDKs
- Rebuild layers and packages for the new runtime; check the AWS SDK version bundled with the runtime. Lambda runtimes (opens in new tab)
- Native/compiled dependencies must be rebuilt for the new runtime version and architecture.
How to test
- Deploy the function on the new runtime as a separate version/alias or staging slot, run your test suite and real event payloads against it, then shift traffic.
- Lambda publishes deprecation, block-create and block-update dates per runtime, and Trusted Advisor/Health notify about affected functions. Lambda runtime support policy (opens in new tab)
