What to check before you upgrade GKE
Upgrading the control plane is the easy part. What breaks is usually workloads and add-ons that still call APIs the new version no longer serves. Here is what to look for — not a diagnosis of your cluster.
Removed APIs
- Find manifests, Helm charts and controllers still using API versions that are no longer served in your target version (table below). Upgrading the cluster does not rewrite stored manifests in Git or Helm releases. Kubernetes deprecated API migration guide (opens in new tab)
- Kubernetes only allows the control plane to move one minor version at a time, so check every removal between your current and target version. Version skew policy (opens in new tab)
| Upgrading to | API versions no longer served |
|---|---|
| 1.32 |
|
The official guide lists no API removals after v1.32 as of our last check; deprecations can still change behavior, so read the changelog. Source: Kubernetes deprecated API migration guide (opens in new tab).
Add-ons, CSI, CNI and ingress
- GKE manages its built-in add-ons; check self-installed controllers and the GKE release notes for your target version. GKE release notes (opens in new tab)
- Check third-party controllers you run (ingress controllers, cert-manager, service mesh, autoscalers, policy engines) against their own supported-Kubernetes-version matrix before upgrading.
Nodes and OS images
- Check the node image (Container-Optimized OS or Ubuntu) changes for your target version. GKE node images (opens in new tab)
- Node (kubelet) versions may lag the control plane only within the supported skew; plan node pool upgrades right after the control plane. Version skew policy (opens in new tab)
Tools that detect issues
- GKE deprecation insights and recommendations flag deprecated API usage and can pause auto-upgrades. GKE deprecation insights (opens in new tab)
- kubent (kube-no-trouble) scans a live cluster for deprecated/removed API usage. kubent (opens in new tab)
- Pluto finds deprecated apiVersions in files, Helm releases and live clusters. Pluto (opens in new tab)
- kubectl convert rewrites manifests to a newer API version. kubectl-convert (opens in new tab)
- The API server exposes an apiserver_requested_deprecated_apis metric and adds a warning header when a deprecated API is called. Kubernetes docs (opens in new tab)

How much does GKE extended support cost?
Extended period cluster management fee of $0.50 per cluster-hour, on top of the $0.10 standard management fee (Extended channel only) (official Google Cloud pricing). Use the EOL Radar calculator to estimate your total. Open the calculator →
What should I check before upgrading GKE?
Check for Kubernetes APIs that are no longer served in your target version (the Kubernetes deprecated API migration guide lists them, e.g. v1.25 removed batch/v1beta1 CronJob and policy/v1beta1 PodDisruptionBudget, and v1.32 removed flowcontrol.apiserver.k8s.io/v1beta3), add-on and driver compatibility, and node image changes. Tools such as kubent and Pluto scan for deprecated API usage.
